You Don't Have to Be an Expert. You Just Have to Show Up.
Every team in our region is led by a volunteer parent coach. That's not a footnote — it's the whole foundation. Without coaches, there's no season.
But here's what surprises most people who step into the role: it ends up being one of the most rewarding things they've ever done.
What Does a Volunteer Coach Actually Do?
You'll run one or two practices and one game per week during the season. You'll help your players learn the basics of the game, work together as a team, and — most importantly — enjoy themselves on the field.
You're not expected to be a tactics expert. You don't need a soccer background. What matters most is showing up consistently, creating a positive environment, and caring about the kids in your charge. The rest is learnable, and we'll help you get there.
You Won't Be Doing This Alone
AYSO has built a coaching program specifically designed for parent volunteers - including people who've never coached anything before. Before your first practice, you'll complete a short age-specific certification course through AYSOU, AYSO's online training platform, along with a few required trainings: Safe Haven, SafeSport, and CDC Concussion Awareness. These aren't just checkboxes - they give you a real foundation.
Beyond the required courses, AYSOU is packed with optional resources — additional training modules, coaching guides, and tools covering everything from running effective practices to working with different age groups. You can go as deep as you want, on your own schedule.
If you want extra support on the field, our partnership with First Touch Soccer gives you access to professional coaches who can work alongside you during practices.
Once the season is underway, you'll find that our coaching community is one of the most collaborative you'll come across. Seasoned coaches, our Coach Admin and board volunteers are genuinely happy to share what's worked for them, answer questions, and be a sounding board when you're figuring things out. You're never on your own island here.
You'll also never be responsible for equipment — we provide everything your team needs.
Why Coaches Keep Coming Back
A lot of our coaches will tell you the same thing: they signed up to help their kid, and ended up getting something unexpected out of it themselves.
Coaching puts you right in the middle of your child's experience - not watching from the sideline, but present for the growth, the breakthroughs, the moments they'll remember. You get to be the person who helped them fall in love with the game, or who believed in them when they were struggling.
And beyond your own child, the relationships you build - with your players, with other families - have a way of lasting long after the season ends. Some of our coaches are still on the field years after their own kids have moved on. That tells you something.
